"So...now that you are dead, what are you going to do with your life?" No matter what world you come from or what God/Goddess/Other you beleived in, we all die sometime and what lies beyond death is what many see as the TRUE adventure!
Within the world which lies beyond the black door, you will be reborn with new skills to supplement the old, the chance to settle up on business with others who have passed along - be it greeting old friends or confronting old enemies - and, most importantly, getting that one final taste of life before surrendering to your final rest.
OOC Purpose:
Nearly every RPG player has lost a character over time, be it from the end of a game or from foolishly rolling up a smoke and asking a dragon for a light. More often than not, this death is fairly sudden and it truely does hurt sometimes to see a favorite character fall silent when they had many more stories to tell.
Granted, they could be reincarnated into a new game via name and basic description, but hell - mostly that is numbers and words on paper. It is often the memories and experiences which make the character more three dimentional to us, otherwise we would not mourn their loss, right?
That is where Beyond the Black Door comes in. As of this writing, BtBD allows direct ports of characters from multiple gaming systems with (and this is IMPORTANT!!!) permission from the developers/owners of the game system given directly to the developers of BtBD when it comes to 'races and places'. Your standard elf from generic fantasy ports over fine and without much trouble but an Aeros from Worlde Arcane is a specialty race and needs permission for porting. If permission is not granted, we work with the developers of the other game to make either a similar race for our own use loosely similar (like winged humanoid for the Aeros example) or we allow the player the choice of 'reincarnation races' if the developers are adamant about not allowing the direct port.
Same thing with places. In order to carry over full memories of the fire at the Red Banner in the Citadel on Tazlure, there is propriatary information involved. If permission is granted, great... If not, they basically go through the river Styx and lose some or all memory (i.e. they can remember other character names, but not where they lived/died, etc.,).
In order to help 'win the developers over to the idea' of allowing the memories, so to speak, the game serves a dual purpose as 'grief therapy' for their players - a way for them to say "Thog, I am sorry, but your character is about to die in the next post. I know you have been playing him for the past six years and would be devistated at his loss, but follow this link for a bit more time with him..."
